Two major announcements from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization came on Tuesday, July 7. First, four member nations of NATO have decided to procure up to five Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton advanced surveillance drones. Second, Denmark will complement its new drone with the purchase of two Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.
When the US Navy introduced the Boeing P-8A Poseidon, it did a lot more than trade turboprop engines for turbofans. The military-grade 737 Next Generation is the successor to the Lockheed P-3C Orion Maritime Patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft. The Orion was a 1960s-vintage submarine hunter made to serve in the Cold War to track and deter Soviet submarines.
Madrid has 34 of the twin-turboprops on order. Airbus is increasing its annual production rate for the C295 tactical transport on the back of major orders for Spain, as the company describes its twin-turboprop as "the undisputed leader in its segment".
