APU (Auxiliary Power Unit)
A small onboard turbine that powers the aircraft on the ground.
The Auxiliary Power Unit is a small gas turbine, usually in the tail of the aircraft, that provides electrical power and bleed air when the main engines are off. It runs the air conditioning and electrical systems at the gate and supplies the compressed air used to start the main engines, so the aircraft does not depend on ground equipment.
