Holding Pattern
A racetrack-shaped flight path used to delay an aircraft in the air.
A holding pattern is a predetermined, oval flight path that an aircraft flies to wait — usually because of traffic congestion, weather, or a delay at the destination airport. Air traffic control assigns a holding fix, direction, and altitude, and aircraft 'stack' at different altitudes until cleared to continue.
