The Midwest aviation scene is gearing up for an exciting summer with a variety of airshows and fly-in events across Wisconsin and Michigan, offering opportunities for pilots and enthusiasts to celebrate flight in diverse ways. Central among these is the iconic EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, held annually at Wittman Regional Airport, which will run from July 20 through 26 in 2026, drawing aviation enthusiasts from across the United States and beyond.
EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2026 focuses on Celebrating the Freedom of Flight, commemorating more than 120 years of U.S. aviation history and innovation. Exhibits and displays will span from the pioneering days of powered flight at Kitty Hawk to the cutting-edge technology of today, including fighter jets, unmanned aerial vehicles, and spacecraft. The tribute extends across the main Boeing Plaza ramp, daily airshows, and thematic programming in venues like Theater in the Woods and the Fly-In Theater.
Highlighted at AirVenture is the Pioneers of Flight exhibit, featuring rare aircraft such as a 1907 Demoiselle replica reflecting Santos-Dumont’s design from France, the 1909 Blériot XI that famously crossed the English Channel, and several World War I-era fighters like the 1915 Morane-Saulnier Type L and the restored 1916 Standard J-1. EAA’s own 1927 Spirit of St. Louis reproduction will also be present, honoring Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic journey.
The event also celebrates America's 250th anniversary with a showcase of red, white, and blue-colored aircraft throughout the Vintage Area, spotlighting the 'Class of ’46' that marked advances in civilian aviation post-World War II. Additionally, a new EAA Vertical Lift Center will debut, spotlighting rotorcraft and vertical lift advancements.
AirVenture’s Public Benefit Flying program returns after a successful 2025, where over 1,500 pilots registered to volunteer for missions delivering aid, medical transport, and rescue animal transfers. This humanitarian aspect reinforces the event’s community engagement beyond entertainment and education. The 2026 military service focus shifts to the U.S. Pacific Air Forces from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, emphasizing their extensive Indo-Pacific operations and humanitarian missions.
The AirVenture Seaplane Base serves arriving floatplane pilots conveniently, with docks, refueling, and amenities nearby on Lake Winnebago. However, pilots flying into Oshkosh for AirVenture are reminded to thoroughly check the NOTAM due to the complex operations and high traffic volume.
Beyond Oshkosh, Wisconsin hosts a lively calendar of local aviation events. This includes the Flying Hamburger Socials traveling throughout the Great Lakes region, the Fred Bull Flugtag at Clintonville Municipal Airport where amateur teams compete with human-powered flying craft, and the EAA Chapter 371 Fly-In Fundraiser in Portage offering breakfast and car shows. Competitions like the Flour Drop Contest and Spot Landing Contest test pilot skills, while social fly-ins such as the Clintonville BBQ and Waupaca Lions Club pancake breakfast combine community support and aviation.
Michigan’s aviation community offers its own spirited events, such as the Grand Marais Bay Splash-In on Lake Superior's shorelines. The state’s numerous lakes and rivers promote a vibrant seaplane culture, with statewide organizations like the Michigan Pilots Facebook group uniting over 21,000 members around a comprehensive schedule of fly-ins and gatherings.
Collectively, these events embody the region’s dynamic aviation culture, blending historic appreciation, pilot camaraderie, skill challenges, and public outreach through unique and varied programming. The Midwest’s 2026 aviation calendar promises unparalleled opportunities for pilot participation and spectator enjoyment.
