Continuing coverage
All Etihad Airways →Etihad Airways is reportedly close to finalizing an order for 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, with an official announcement expected during the Farnborough International Airshow 2026 later this month. The possible purchase continues the Abu Dhabi-based carrier’s investment in the 787 family, which already comprises a prominent part of its widebody fleet. The deal is seen as a move to strengthen Etihad’s long-term growth strategy amid a turbulent period in the Middle East aviation market earlier this year.
The rumored agreement was highlighted by industry sources indicating that Etihad is weighing options within the 787 series but has not yet disclosed which specific variants would form part of the new order. These aircraft have become integral to Etihad’s operations for their extended range and fuel efficiency. The timing of the announcement at Farnborough aligns with the airshow's tradition as a platform for major fleet and vendor deals in the aerospace sector.
Etihad’s existing Dreamliner fleet currently consists of 47 units split predominantly between the Boeing 787-9 and 787-10 variants. The larger portion, 37 aircraft, are the 787-9 model, averaging 7.6 years in service, while the remaining 10 are 787-10s with an average age of seven years. The carrier’s strategic choice of these midsize, long-range twins has been pivotal in maintaining a modern and efficient fleet, significantly younger than the airline’s average overall aircraft age of 9.7 years.
The configuration of Etihad’s 787-10s is uniform, featuring 32 business class seats alongside 295 economy seats, emphasizing a balance of passenger capacity and comfort. The 787-9s offer more varied cabin layouts, including versions with just business and economy seating as well as configurations incorporating a first-class cabin, allowing flexibility across different markets and route demands.
Operational data from Cirium reveal that Etihad currently schedules 312 one-way departures using the 787-10 from its Abu Dhabi hub in July 2026, with Milan Malpensa being the most served destination on this model, tallying up 42 flights in the month. Other routes such as Beijing Capital, Hanoi, and Madrid receive daily service, underscoring the aircraft’s role in connecting Abu Dhabi globally.
The more prolific 787-9 model accounts for 1,154 Etihad flights departing from Abu Dhabi in the same period. High-frequency routes served multiple times daily on this variant include Chicago O'Hare, Frankfurt, and Malé, illustrating the aircraft’s importance on longer-haul and high-demand markets. Other routes operated more than once daily include Kuala Lumpur, Munich, Phuket, and Rome.
Etihad’s rumored order would add to the four 787-9 and nineteen 787-10 aircraft the airline already has on backlog. This expansion reflects a strategic long-term commitment to the Boeing 787 platform, even as the Middle East region recently faced operational constrictions due to geopolitical tensions earlier in 2026. This fleet renewal and growth plan signals Etihad’s willingness to invest in disruptive market conditions.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner family is recognized for its advanced composite airframe, fuel efficiency, and passenger comfort, making it a preferred model for airlines upgrading their widebody fleets. Etihad’s continued acquisition of Dreamliners supports its ambitions to enhance connectivity and maintain competitive services on intercontinental routes.
With the Farnborough Airshow less than a week away, all eyes in the aviation industry will be on Etihad and Boeing for a possible order announcement that could shape the carrier’s fleet composition over the next decade. Confirmation of the deal will mark a significant milestone, reaffirming Etihad's operational strategy and the Dreamliner's importance in its future network planning.
