Survey Mistakes Starbucks on Delta as Best Coffee, Misjudges Amex Lounges

A recent survey named Delta's Starbucks coffee and American Express Centurion lounges as the best, but analysis reveals these picks favor popularity over quality and experience.

The gist

Recent survey misses nuances, conflating popular with best coffee and overstating American Express lounge appeal.

A new survey by Point.me crowned Delta's Starbucks coffee as the best among airlines and touted American Express Centurion lounges as the top lounge option. However, a closer look shows that these accolades prioritize mass appeal rather than true quality or passenger experience. Rather than reflecting objective excellence, the results largely echo popularity and familiarity.

Delta offers Starbucks coffee onboard, a brand ubiquitous with about 40,000 locations worldwide. Because of this widespread recognition, many travelers view it favorably. Yet, Starbucks's global presence and mass marketing should not be conflated with superior coffee quality in the specialized context of inflight service. Other airlines provide coffees that connoisseurs and informed travelers might find more refined or suited to the challenges of in-air brewing.

United Airlines switched to Illy coffee following a change in management and a desire to improve onboard quality beyond the previously derided fresh brew coffee. Similarly, Alaska Airlines serves Stumptown coffee, another premium brand appreciated for its richer flavors. These choices indicate an emphasis on elevating the passenger experience through specialty coffee selections beyond what’s simply popular or familiar.

In contrast, American Airlines partnered with Lavazza coffee, marking progress from its formerly criticized offerings. The incremental improvements suggest that airlines continue to compete intensely on beverage service quality. Given the difficulties of brewing coffee at high altitude and the impact of onboard water quality on flavor, selecting the right coffee brand is only one part of the challenge to serving satisfying cups in flight.

The survey also judged Air France as having the best wine service in business class, a reputation that aligns with the airline’s traditional focus on premium European dining. While sparkling wines and aromatic whites generally fare better in the pressurized cabin environment due to their acidity and flavor profile, wine selection is a complex art onboard, influenced by factors including shipping, storage, and pairing with inflight menus. Airlines like Singapore and Emirates also earn acclaim for sophisticated wine programs.

Regarding snacks, the survey rated Southwest Airlines lowest, mainly citing their standard offerings like pretzel braids and cookies. Yet, Southwest's extra legroom section provides upgraded snacks like Mexican wedding cookies. American Airlines’s snack choices were also viewed critically. These distinctions highlight that inflight food service quality varies not only between airlines but also by cabin sections.

The evaluation of airport lounges placed American Express Centurion lounges at the top, a finding that merits scrutiny. Although Amex pioneered branded lounge networks, the explosive growth in cardholders has often led to overcrowding. Other networks like Chase Sapphire offer lounges with generally better food and design aesthetics, while Capital One Landings lounges particularly stand out for high-quality offerings. Lounge popularity driven by card memberships does not necessarily equate to superior amenity or passenger comfort.

Overall, the survey’s conclusions highlight the tension between popularity and true quality within airline services. Mass preferences can skew perceptions, especially when hospitality experiences are measured globally across vastly different passenger expectations and operational contexts. The nuance of what constitutes the 'best' inflight coffee, wine, snacks, and lounges requires deeper criteria than general survey responses can provide.

Frequently asked questions

Which airline coffees are considered better than Delta's Starbucks according to the survey analysis?
United Airlines with Illy coffee and Alaska Airlines with Stumptown coffee are regarded as offering higher quality coffee choices than Delta's Starbucks.
What are the criticisms surrounding American Express Centurion lounges?
American Express Centurion lounges suffer from overcrowding due to high cardholder volumes, and other networks like Chase and Capital One offer better design and food quality.
Why is wine selection challenging for airlines inflight?
The inflight environment alters taste perception due to lower pressure and humidity, making sparkling wines and aromatic whites more suitable while tannic reds can taste harsher.

Delta Air Lines Lets Basic Economy Passengers Keep Full-Size Carry-Ons, Bucking Industry Trend

After top legacy airlines unbundled their economy cabins to create basic economy, the industry expected a race to the absolute bottom of passenger discomfort. For the most part, that expectation has become a reality across the domestic aviation market, turning the simple act of boarding an aircraft into a host of gate-enforcement checks and surprise baggage penalties. A glaring anomaly persists at the nation's most profitable legacy airline even as the rest of the industry moves in the same direction.
