Fraport sees global passenger growth in H1 2026 despite Frankfurt dip

Fraport's portfolio reached 77.7 million passengers in first half 2026, buoyed by gains at international airports amid Frankfurt's slight decline.

The gist

Fraport's international airports drive overall growth of 1% in H1 2026, offsetting a 0.8% passenger drop at Frankfurt Airport.

All 2026

Fraport AG has reported its passenger and cargo traffic results for June and the first half of 2026, revealing mixed performances across its global airport portfolio. While Frankfurt Airport experienced a modest decline in passenger volumes, the group overall showed growth driven by stronger results at its international airports. For the first six months, Fraport's actively managed airports collectively handled 77.7 million passengers, representing a 1.0 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025.

Frankfurt Airport, Fraport's largest hub, recorded around 5.7 million passengers in June 2026, which is a 1.7 percent reduction year-over-year. The airport's passenger throughput for the first semester dipped 0.8 percent to 28.9 million. This downturn was influenced by several external factors, notably Lufthansa strikes impacting nearly 700,000 travelers, and the outbreak of conflict involving Iran, which led to flight restrictions and substantially reduced demand for routes to the Middle East. Passenger traffic to that region fell 35 percent over the half-year, totaling approximately 880,000 travelers, with June figures still down 27 percent compared to the previous year.

Following these headwinds, there were encouraging upticks on other fronts. Frankfurt saw increased passenger flows to southern and northern European destinations, along with growth in long-haul markets such as the Far East, Africa, and Latin America. Passengers traveling to and from Africa rose 8.0 percent to 1.6 million in the first half, and Far East routes grew 6.4 percent to 3.3 million. Frankfurt's cargo operations remained resilient, with June airfreight and airmail volumes rising 2.0 percent to 177,676 metric tons and an overall first-half growth of 1.0 percent to 1.0 million metric tons. However, aircraft movements declined 4.9 percent in June to 39,390, alongside a 2.3 percent decrease in total maximum takeoff weight.

Outside Germany, Fraport's international airports largely compensated for Frankfurt's declines. In total, passenger traffic at all non-domestic locations reached about 19.7 million in June, reflecting a slight 1.1 percent decrease month-on-month but contributing to a robust half-year total of 77.7 million passengers across the group. Standout performers included Slovenia's Ljubljana Airport, which saw a 12.7 percent surge to 184,211 passengers. Brazilian airports Fortaleza and Porto Alegre combined for a 2.0 percent increase to 1.2 million travelers. Peru's Lima Airport experienced a marginal rise of 0.9 percent, reaching roughly 2.0 million passengers.

Fourteen Greek airports handled 5.6 million passengers in the first half, marking a 4.7 percent increase, while Bulgarian coastal airports Burgas and Varna grew 8.0 percent to nearly 594,000 passengers. Antalya Airport in Turkey bucked this trend, with passenger volumes dropping 9.6 percent to 4.5 million in June, affected by elevated tourism prices and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East dampening bookings.

Fraport CEO Dr. Stefan Schulte addressed the challenges faced during the period, pointing to strikes, geopolitical unrest including the Iran conflict, jet fuel concerns, and rising oil prices as factors limiting passenger willingness to book flights. He indicated that Fraport now expects Frankfurt Airport's full-year passenger numbers to remain stable at 2025 levels while projecting continued growth at its international airports. Despite the traffic setbacks in Germany, the company is maintaining its 2026 financial outlook and considers its targets achievable.

The group's diversified portfolio has proved beneficial in mitigating regional adversities. While Frankfurt continues to face pressures from political and operational disruptions, the positive momentum at airports in Greece, Bulgaria, Slovenia, and Latin America underscores Fraport's capacity to navigate volatility. Cargo growth at Frankfurt offers additional revenue resilience, as airfreight tends to be less correlated with leisure passenger trends.

As summer progresses, Fraport's focus is on restoring Middle East connectivity and leveraging strong demand across European and long-haul routes to sustain growth. Overall, the half-year results confirm that the company remains on track operationally and financially despite a complex global environment.

These figures reflect the delicate balance between geopolitical events and industry resilience as 2026 unfolds. Fraport's ability to manage multiple external challenges while preserving growth in its international airports will be crucial in shaping its performance during the remainder of the year.

The highest welcome offer on the Amex Business Gold is currently for up to 200,000 bonus Membership Rewards points upon completing minimum spending, though different people are eligible for different offers. What are the requirements for the Amex Business Gold bonus? The Amex Business Gold generally follows a "once in a lifetime" rule for the welcome offer, so you're typically only going to be eligible if you haven't earned a welcome offer on the card in the past. That being said, during the application process you should receive a warning if you're not eligible for a welcome offer, before there's a hard pull. What should you do if you get a lower offer for the Amex Business Gold? If you get a lower offer than the maximum for the Amex Business Gold, you can either choose not to follow through with the application (with no impact on your credit score), and maybe try again in the future, in hopes of getting something better. Alternatively, you can apply anyway. Not all people will be eligible for the best offer, and there's still lots of merit to getting the card with a lower offer. Can you earn the bonus if you product change to the Amex Business Gold? The Amex Business Gold welcome offer is only available to those who directly apply for the card under an eligible offer. If you product change from another Amex card, you're generally not eligible for the bonus. Can you earn the bonus on the Amex Business Gold if you're an authorized user? If you're an authorized user on someone else's Amex Business Gold, you're still eligible for the welcome offer on the card if you apply under your own account. Bottom line The Amex Business Gold Card currently has an excellent welcome offer that's as high as 200,000 bonus Membership Rewards points upon completing minimum spending. While the spending requirement is significant, so is the number of points you can earn, so this is worth it if you can swing it… assuming you're eligible! The main reason to consider picking up this card (beyond the great welcome offer) is because it offers 4x points in valuable categories. On top of that, though, the card offers some credits that can help offset the annual fee. Do you plan on picking up the Amex Business Gold Card ? What kind of a welcome offer are you eligible for? Air Canada and IAMAW Reach Tentative Four-Year Deal Covering 11,000 Maintenance Workers

Air Canada has reached a new tentative collective agreement with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW), covering approximately 11,000 employees across the airline's technical and operational divisions. The agreement, announced on July 13, 2026, according to GlobeNewswire, covers the airline's Technical Operations, Maintenance and Operational Support group, which includes employees in Technical Operations, Airports, Cargo, Logistics, and Supply. What the agreement covers The four-year collective agreement would take effect retroactively from April 1, 2026, and remain in place until March 31, 2030. The tentative deal follows an earlier agreement reached in June between Air Canada and the IAMAW covering more than 11,000 employees in Maintenance, Cabin Services, Airport Airside Operations, Cargo, Finance, and Clerical roles. Terms of that agreement were kept confidential pending ratification by union membership and approval by the Air Canada Board of Directors. The latest agreement is subject to ratification by union members, which is expected to be completed in the coming days. If ratified, the agreement would mark the sixth collective agreement concluded at Air Canada this year, reflecting a period of active labor negotiations at the carrier. Air Canada said the agreement recognizes the contributions and skills of its employees. RELATED SAS CEO Anko van der Werff to leave airline for Air Canada in 2027
