Iberia is gearing up to introduce a brand-new lounge at its Madrid-Barajas Airport hub, marking a significant enhancement for the airline's top-tier customers. Targeted exclusively at oneworld Emerald members—the highest alliance tier—this lounge represents Iberia's most premium facility yet. Scheduled for a full opening around September 7 to 10, 2026, the lounge seeks to elevate the travel experience for the airline's elite passengers as they transit through Madrid.
Currently, Iberia operates two main lounges within Madrid-Barajas Airport. These are divided between Schengen and non-Schengen flight areas and cater to business class passengers and oneworld Sapphire members and above. The existing lounges, particularly the non-Schengen one, have received favorable feedback for their amenities and service. However, these are standard oneworld lounges accessible to various tiers and do not offer the exclusive service level planned for the new facility.
The upcoming lounge will be situated in the Schengen zone, adjacent to the existing Dali Lounge, mainly serving regional flights. Despite the official launch date being in early September, Iberia has begun a soft opening phase. During this period, select Iberia Club members who also hold oneworld Emerald status are being invited to experience the lounge before it fully opens. This sneak peek does not currently extend to oneworld Emerald members from other airlines, indicating a pilot phase focused on Iberia's own loyal elite clientele.
Noteworthy enhancements distinguish this new lounge from Iberia's current offerings. It features a modern design aesthetic coupled with an elevated culinary program, including table service for food and beverages—details that aim to provide a first-class style experience. This development underscores Iberia's commitment to rewarding its highest-status passengers with more personalized and upscale accommodations.
Within the oneworld alliance, Emerald members are generally entitled to first class-style lounge access. However, some flagship lounges, such as British Airways' Concorde Room or Qatar Airways' Al Safwa Lounge, restrict access even to Emerald members. In such cases, alternate lounges of lesser quality are offered. Iberia's introduction of a dedicated Emerald lounge thus fills a gap by providing a premium space tailored specifically to the top tier and separate from the typical business class lounges.
Iberia is following in the footsteps of other oneworld carriers who have developed special lounges for their highest elite tiers in the absence of first class facilities. One notable example is Finnair's Platinum Wing lounge in Helsinki, widely regarded for its upscale ambiance and service standards. Iberia’s move signals a broader trend among airlines to provide top-tier alliance members with dedicated environments that reflect their elite status, even if the airline itself does not operate a first class cabin.
The timing of this lounge initiative aligns with Iberia's ongoing efforts to enhance its flagship hub infrastructure and overall passenger experience. Given Madrid’s strategic role as a major European gateway, the new lounge is expected to significantly impact the perception and comfort of Iberia’s top-tier flyers. By creating a distinctive, high-end lounge environment, Iberia aims to strengthen loyalty among its most valuable customers and improve competitive positioning within the oneworld alliance.
With the lounge already in a limited soft opening phase, Iberia appears confident in the new facility’s appeal and readiness. The full official launch in early September 2026 will open the space to all eligible oneworld Emerald members flying through Madrid’s Schengen area. This addition enhances Iberia’s lounge portfolio and could set a precedent for similar developments at other major hubs, reflecting evolving expectations for elite passenger services within global alliances.

Delta Resumes Seattle-Narita Flights to Rival Alaska's Tokyo Expansion
Alaska Airlines, fresh off a merger with Hawaiian, is depending on long-haul flying for its gowth. Delta Air Lines plans to resume service between Seattle and Tokyo's Narita airport, putting it in direct competition with Alaska Airlines on a route critical to its post-merger growth plans. The Atlanta-based carrier stopped flights between the two airports in 2020, serving only Tokyo's Haneda airport from Seattle as well as from Atlanta, Detroit, and Minneapolis in the subsequent years. The returning daily, non-stop service will start in March using Airbus A330-900neo aircraft. "Japan is one of the most important and popular markets in Delta’s global network," says Delta vice-president of network planning, Jeff Arinder. "By launching flights to both Haneda and Narita airports, we will increase access to Tokyo and expand our seating capacity." Long-haul flying from Seattle is key to Alaska's strategy after acquiring Hawaiian Airlines in 2024 and will account for all of its growth in the second half of 2026, executives say. Flights to Tokyo on Hawaiian's former fleet were the first to launch by the combined carrier in 2025. "On the Incheon and Narita markets, what I’m seeing is year-over-year, significantly higher booked load factors," Alaska executive vice-president and chief commercial officer Andrew Harrison said on the company's earnings call in July. Once the route resumes, Delta will offer three daily departures to Tokyo: one to Narita and two to Haneda, which could present significant pressure on Alaska.

Two Women Chase Aeroflot Plane on Moscow Ramp After Missing Flight
Two late passengers in high heels ran onto the airport ramp at Moscow Sheremetyevo to chase their Aeroflot aircraft after boarding had ended and the plane was already being towed away. Ground workers and police stopped them, but the stranger question is how they got through a secured door and close enough to interrupt ramp operations in the first place.

Delta Air Lines to Resume Seattle-Tokyo Narita Service in 2027, Challenging Alaska Airlines
Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines is planning to expand its transpacific network from Seattle with the return of nonstop flights to and from Tokyo Narita after a seven-year break. The reinstated service will directly compete with Alaska Airlines – its main contender in the Pacific Northwest.

Delta Air Lines Set to Announce New Austin International Route Likely to Paris in August
Delta is expected to announce new Austin service on August 13, and the long-rumored Austin–Paris nonstop for summer 2027 appears increasingly likely. The route would fit Delta's broader Austin strategy: build long-haul service, add major lounge capacity, grow into the airport's second-largest carrier, and use a lucrative expansion market to drive deeper Amex card engagement.
