Dassault Mercure Twinjet: France's Answer to the Boeing 737 Emerges in 1970s Market

The Dassault Mercure entered a crowded short-range twinjet market with a six-abreast, 150-seat design, aiming to fill a niche between smaller jets and the Airbus A300.

The gist

The Dassault Mercure was a French six-abreast twinjet designed for short routes, mirroring the Boeing 737 in size and purpose.

Throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, the short-haul market for twin-engine jets became saturated with several well-known aircraft, including the BAC-111, DC-9, Boeing 737, and the Fokker F.28 Fellowship. However, French manufacturer Dassault-Breguet identified a gap in the range and capacity offerings of these types. To address this, the company proposed a larger twin-engine jet capable of seating at least 150 passengers and optimized for routes less than approximately 932 miles (1,500 km). This segment was seen as underserved, particularly for high-density, short-haul flights within France and similar markets, positioned between smaller twins and larger jets like the Airbus A300, which could carry over 300 passengers.

Market analyses conducted by Dassault in 1968 forecasted a demand for roughly 1,500 aircraft in this category over the subsequent decade. Among contemporaries, only the Caravelle 12 and the DC-9-50 could carry around 130 passengers in a high-density single-class layout. Meanwhile, other designs like the BAC 1-11-200 and stretched Fokker F.28 variants had significantly lower capacities, underscoring Dassault’s rationale for a more capacious jet. The resulting design, ultimately named Mercure, would feature a conventional low-wing configuration with six-abreast seating—directly competing with the Boeing 737, which it closely resembled in appearance and layout.

A key differentiator was the Mercure’s engine placement: Unlike the 737’s engines mounted beneath the wing trailing edge, Mercure’s turbofan engines were attached lower and slightly forward of the wings. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-15 turbofans, each delivering 15,500 pounds of thrust, these were proven engines also used on the Boeing 727 and other aircraft. This arrangement necessitated a longer landing gear strut to provide adequate ground clearance. The overall aircraft length extended to just over 114 feet, longer than the 737, allowing six additional rows of seats and a wider fuselage for six-abreast seating.

Dassault-Breguet committed to the project on the basis of a single firm customer, French airline Air Inter, which initially ordered ten aircraft in January 1972. The French government provided significant financial backing, funding 56% of the development cost. Several European aerospace firms formed a consortium to share risks and work on designated components. Aeritalia (Italy) handled the tail unit; Canadair (Canada) manufactured wing panels and engine pylons; CASA (Spain) took fuselage sections; Switzerland’s Eidgenössisches Flugzeugwerk produced engine air intakes and cowling panels; and Belgium’s SABCA supplied control surfaces like flaps and spoilers. Assembly took place at Dassault’s Bordeaux-Merignac facility.

The Mercure 100 featured a robust airframe designed for a 30,000 flight cycle lifespan and 40,000 flight hours. Its wingspan was about 100 feet with a 25-degree sweep and included complex high-lift devices such as triple-slotted trailing edge flaps and leading-edge slats. The landing gear comprised twin-wheeled hydraulically operated units with antiskid brakes and the ability to manually extend in case of hydraulic failure, allowing tight ground maneuvering within just a 70-foot turning radius. Cabin entry was through front and rear doors equipped with built-in airstairs, supporting quick turnaround times.

Avionics on the Mercure incorporated fighter-inspired technologies developed by Dassault, including a head-up display which helped reduce pilot workload during critical flight phases by combining external visual cues with instrument information. The cockpit housed a two-person crew with space for two additional observers. Flight control systems operated through three independent hydraulic circuits powered by engine-driven and electric pumps, ensuring redundancy and reliability critical for commercial operations.

Despite its promising design and thorough planning, the Mercure’s commercial success was limited. Air Inter remained the sole operator, and the anticipated widespread orders failed to materialize. Still, the Mercure embodies a unique chapter in European short-haul aviation history as a well-engineered twinjet developed to meet a specific market niche with European industrial cooperation.

IndiGo Halts Leased Widebody Flights, Awaits Airbus A350 to Restart Long-Haul Service
