American Airlines Begins Unlocking A321XLR Business Class Suite Doors After FAA Approval

American Airlines has received FAA certification for the privacy doors on its A321XLR business class seats and is implementing a phased rollout unlocking them across its fleet.

American Airlines is gradually unlocking business class suite doors on its A321XLRs after FAA certification, starting with its newest aircraft.

American Airlines began receiving its Airbus A321XLR aircraft in late 2025 to serve premium transcontinental routes and other long-range narrow-body markets. These aircraft feature a newly designed business class seat with privacy doors intended to enhance passenger comfort and privacy. However, until recently, these doors remained locked and unusable by passengers due to pending regulatory approval.

Certification processes for aircraft seating and related components can be complex and time-consuming. While American quickly gained FAA certification for most aspects of its new business class seats, the privacy doors themselves required separate approval, which delayed their actual use onboard. The airline had to operate its A321XLR fleet with these doors closed despite their physical installation.

The Federal Aviation Administration has now granted American Airlines approval to unlock and use the business class privacy doors on the A321XLR. The rollout is not instantaneous fleet-wide; instead, American is activating the doors gradually. The first aircraft to receive this activation is the airline’s newest A321XLR, registered as N302NY. This aircraft began flying passengers with the doors operational shortly after certification.

American Airlines plans to continue unlocking the suite doors on the remainder of its six-strong A321XLR fleet throughout the fall season. The activation process involves technical operations personnel who must enable the doors on each plane. This phased activation suggests additional considerations beyond simply turning a latch—likely involving systems integration and safety verifications onboard.

Notably, the presence of suite doors impacts flight attendant crew requirements. FAA regulations mandate one flight attendant for every 50 passengers or fraction thereof, plus additional staffing when suites with doors are installed. For these A321XLRs with a 155-seat configuration and suite doors, five flight attendants are required, which aligns with American’s current staffing deployed on these aircraft.

The reason for the drawn-out activation timeline remains somewhat ambiguous. Industry observers have speculated that American’s approach could be due to operational caution, training, or technical complexities in enabling the doors safely. Unlike other airlines facing prolonged challenges in seat certification for new business classes, American has managed a relatively smooth approval process overall.

By contrast, airlines such as United and Delta continue to experience delays with certifications on their new business class seating, with United yet to receive approval for its Dreamliner doors and Delta reportedly considering a change of seat manufacturers amid certification hurdles. American’s steady progress on the A321XLR’s privacy doors therefore positions it competitively in premium narrow-body service.

American’s stepwise unlocking of the privacy doors marks a practical milestone in their A321XLR deployment, enhancing passenger comfort on select aircraft. While the suite doors themselves are not revolutionary, their activation symbolizes the evolution and refinement of premium cabin products in the narrow-body segment, meeting the growing expectations of transcontinental travelers.

Air New Zealand to Retrofit Boeing 777 Fleet with New Business Class Seats in 2027

Air New Zealand has just unveiled plans to retrofit its entire Boeing 777 with new business class seats starting in 2027. However, these won't be the same new business class seats that are currently being installed on the Boeing 787 fleet… and that's probably a good thing? Air New Zealand plans reverse herringbone seats for 777s Air New Zealand intends to introduce a new business class product on its entire fleet of seven Boeing 777-300ERs (that excludes the ex-Cathay Pacific frames). Specifically, the airline will be installing reverse herringbone seats with doors on these aircraft, based on the Collins Aerospace Elevation platform. The cabin will feature 44 seats (just as it does now), with seats having 43″ of pitch. All seats will have direct aisle access and privacy doors, and center seats will have sliding privacy dividers between them. Seat back entertainment will consist of 18″ monitors with bluetooth audio. The seats will also have USB-A and USB-C charging, but no wireless charging. Air New Zealand's plan is to reconfigure the first aircraft with these interiors as of March 2027, with hopes of having the plane in service by May 2027. Of course when we're talking about aircraft interiors, it's especially important to emphasize that delays are common, and even likely. As before, the planes will feature 342 seats, with the same number of business class seats. However, we're going to see two premium economy seats removed and two economy seats added, as obviously a little more space was needed to make room for these seats. New Air New Zealand 777 business class seat This looks great, even if the inconsistency is odd Air New Zealand's new 777 business class is long overdue, and customers should be very happy about this. There's nothing cutting edge about it, but it puts the product in the category of being very competitive. That's a massive contrast to the current herringbone seats you have on these planes, which I'd argue are among the worst business class seats (at least purpose-built long haul ones) flying nowadays. Now, from a consistency standpoint, I do find it strange how Air New Zealand is currently installing two different new business class seats on two different fleet types. In some cases that's necessary due to cabin width, but clearly that's not the case here, since the 777 cabin is actually wider than the 787 cabin. Ironically, I think Air New Zealand's new off the shelf business class on the 777 is a superior product to the custom product on the 787 , which doesn't even have doors. The airline will be installing a familiar reverse herringbone product with doors, which represents a major upgrade over the carrier's current herringbone seats on these planes. The only thing I can't make sense of is why the airline is installing a different product than on the Boeing 787 fleet. Admittedly I actually think this product is better than the new 787 product. Lufthansa debuts its first Airbus A350-1000 adorned with centennial anniversary livery

Lufthansa is preparing to welcome its first Airbus A350-1000, an aircraft that carries added significance beyond its size. The aircraft, painted at Airbus's Toulouse facility in a blue design featuring a white crane graphic and the markings "1926 | 2026" and "100," is set to become the seventh addition to the airline's special fleet commemorating its 100th anniversary.
