FedEx Returns Four MD-11Fs to Service as Fleet Reintegration Targets Peak Season
Following enhancements prompted by last year's UPS Louisville accident, FedEx resumes operation of four MD-11 freighters with plans to fully restore the fleet before peak season.
The gist
FedEx is reactivating its MD-11 freighters after the 2025 grounding, aiming to have the entire fleet flying again before peak cargo demand.
FedEx has begun returning its fleet of Boeing MD-11 freighters to service after grounding the aircraft type in November 2025. This move comes in the wake of a fatal accident involving a UPS MD-11 at Louisville, which prompted the carrier to temporarily halt operations of the trijet freighters to implement safety fixes. As of late June 2026, FedEx has successfully reactivated four MD-11Fs and aims to restore its entire MD-11 fleet ahead of the upcoming peak cargo period later this year.
The decision to ground the MD-11Fs followed investigation findings and corrective measures recommended by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) after the UPS crash in Louisville. Safety enhancements focused on operational procedures and aircraft systems deemed critical for safe MD-11 operations. FedEx has worked closely with Boeing and regulatory authorities to develop and approve these fixes, which were essential for the phased return to flight of the aging but capable MD-11 freighters.
FedEx's MD-11 fleet is a key component of its long-haul cargo operation, valued for its range and payload capacity. The temporary removal of these aircraft from service disrupted some capacity, intensifying reliance on other freighter models. The return of four aircraft signals a cautious yet confident step towards full fleet reintroduction, supporting the carrier’s ability to meet increased demand during the traditionally busy end-of-year shipping season.
This gradual fleet reintegration reflects the broader air cargo industry's commitment to safety and reliability, while addressing concerns about operating older aircraft types. FedEx’s proactive approach aims not only to ensure compliance with safety mandates but also to maintain its competitive edge in a peak season where cargo volumes surge. Airlines operating the MD-11 will be closely monitoring FedEx’s progress as a benchmark for managing fleet risks and operational continuity.
Looking ahead, the full reinstatement of FedEx’s MD-11s will offer a significant boost to the carrier’s freight capacity. Market observers expect that the lessons learned and fixes developed following the UPS accident will inform similar practices for MD-11 operators worldwide. The successful reactivation leading into peak season could stabilize supply chains and affirm confidence in the trijet’s role in global air cargo logistics.
