India formally declares Netra Mk 1 AEW fleet fully operational with final clearance

India's Defence Research and Development Organisation has granted final operational clearance to the Netra Mk 1 airborne early warning fleet, marking a key advancement in its aerial surveillance capabilities.

The gist

India's Netra Mk 1 AEW fleet, based on Embraer ERJ-145 jets, is now fully operational after receiving final clearance.

India’s airborne early warning and control capabilities have taken a significant step forward as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) officially declared the Netra Mk 1 fleet fully operational. The announcement came on 25 June in Bengaluru, where final operational clearance was granted to the Indian Air Force’s fleet of Netra Mk 1 aircraft. This clearance marks the transition of the fleet from development to active service.

The Netra Mk 1 is built upon modified Embraer ERJ-145 regional jets, which have been retrofitted with advanced radar and surveillance systems to provide critical airborne early warning (AEW) functions. These platforms enable the Indian Air Force to maintain continuous situational awareness of surrounding airspace, detecting and tracking enemy aircraft and missiles at long ranges. The AEW fleet is central to India’s integrated air defence strategy.

This development follows years of testing and incremental improvements led by the DRDO. Deploying indigenous AEW aircraft like the Netra Mk 1 represents a move towards self-reliance in defence technologies amid growing regional security challenges. The ERJ-145 base platform was selected for its range, speed, and operational reliability, making it suitable for the demanding AEW role.

Prior to final operational clearance, the Netra Mk 1 underwent rigorous trials and evaluations to validate radar functionality, sensor integration, system endurance, and overall mission readiness. The fleet’s full operational capability means Indian defence authorities can now confidently deploy these jets to provide real-time command and control support during peacetime surveillance and potential conflict scenarios.

Looking ahead, the Indian Air Force may continue to expand its AEW capabilities with future upgrades or additional platforms, but the Netra Mk 1’s induction represents an immediate boost to the country’s aerial defence network. Maintaining vigilance in the increasingly contested airspace of South Asia underscores the importance of having robust airborne early warning assets.

This milestone also highlights the synergy between Indian research bodies and the armed forces in turning advanced aerospace concepts into operational tools critical for national security. The Netra Mk 1 fleet is poised to enhance India’s airspace monitoring and strengthen its overall deterrence posture in coming years.
