United Airlines Debuts Extra-Spacious Economy Plus Seats on Airbus A321XLR

United Airlines is set to debut an innovative Economy Plus seating option on its forthcoming Airbus A321XLR fleet that promises enhanced passenger comfort with extra elbow room and large shared tables. This dedicated row, featuring tables stretching across the open middle seat, will provide travelers with expansive personal space, especially suited for longer international flights. The new seating configuration will be available on all 50 A321XLR jets that United has ordered, highlighting a significant upgrade for its narrowbody fleet.

This novel Economy Plus arrangement represents an exclusive offering among major U.S. airlines, distinguishing United’s product lineup in the competitive market. Following the recent introduction of United Relax Row—an inventive couch-style seating on widebody Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft—this move continues United's emphasis on innovative, comfortable seating tailored to different cabin classes and aircraft types.

According to Andrew Nocella, United’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, the airline is making comprehensive investments in its fleet to provide customers with options and value across cabins. Beyond the premium Polaris lie-flat seats, United is enhancing Economy Plus with notable extra legroom, now supplemented by additional elbow space facilitated through custom-designed tables, setting a new standard for comfort on narrowbody aircraft.

Each A321XLR will have one dedicated Economy Plus row where the middle seat is left open and capped with a table stretching from armrest to armrest, covered in a soft, leather-like finish. These tables include two integrated cup holders to add convenience during meals or drinks. This layout aims to allow passengers in window and aisle seats to relax without feeling cramped, a valuable feature on flights that can span several hours.

The aircraft design complements these features by adding three extra inches of legroom to Economy Plus, further improving the comfort quotient without compromising the operational efficiency typical of narrowbody jets. The Airbus A321XLR itself was developed to elevate United's short- to medium-haul international service, replacing older Boeing 757s with a more advanced and passenger-friendly platform.

United’s A321XLRs offer 32 premium seats—significantly more than the 16 premium seats on the 757s they are replacing—including all-aisle Polaris Studio suites with privacy doors. Passengers across cabins will benefit from large 4K OLED entertainment screens, ranging from 13 inches in Economy to 19 inches in Polaris. Additional amenities include spacious overhead bins and a snack bar at the rear of the economy cabin, contributing to an improved overall travel experience.

Operationally, United plans to staff its A321XLRs with five flight attendants on most transatlantic routes, aligning with staffing levels currently in use for Boeing 757 flights. The launch of this aircraft on domestic routes is set for later this fall, with international service commencing by early 2027. Pricing and further details about the new Economy Plus seat row will be announced closer to their on-sale date.

This strategic enhancement to Economy Plus is part of United’s broader initiative to refresh its fleet and product offerings with customer comfort in mind. By integrating distinctive features like the shared table seats on a narrowbody jet, United is setting itself apart in a segment where such luxuries are rare, thus adding valuable options for travelers on both international and domestic flights.
