Alaska Airlines' Atmos Rewards program has shifted to a monthly cadence for its Global Getaways award sale, offering members significant discounts on award tickets to select international destinations. The August 2026 promotion allows travelers to save up to 50% on economy award travel to a curated list of cities. This monthly offering replaces the prior quarterly schedule, providing more frequent opportunities but with a narrower booking window, invigorating member engagement and choice.

This month's sale launched on August 4, 2026, and closes on August 8, 2026. Eligible bookings must be made within this timeframe. Travel dates vary by destination but generally fall between August 2026 and February 2027. The offer applies exclusively to economy class redemptions, excluding first class, business class, and premium economy. Originating flights must commence in the United States, with partner airline participation depending on saver award availability. Most notably, the discounted awards maintain the standard Atmos Rewards change and cancellation policies, including refundable options subject to typical partner-related booking fees.

Destinations featured in the August Global Getaways sale highlight a mix of historic cities and island paradises, aligned with the theme to encourage travel after busy holiday seasons. Travelers can book one-way awards at reduced mileage rates to cities such as Budapest, Hungary; Edinburgh, Scotland; Hong Kong; Madrid, Spain; Nadi, Fiji; Osaka, Japan; Papeete, Tahiti; Rome, Italy; and Sydney, Australia. Discount levels vary with some cities like Edinburgh offering standout low thresholds at 20,000 points for travel between January and February 2027.

These reductions present attractive value propositions, particularly for economy travelers seeking to maximize their award mileage. For example, redemptions to European destinations like Madrid and Edinburgh start at just 20,000 points one-way, significantly below typical award costs on other programs. Alaska's ability to extend its discounts across partner airlines further enhances the program's appeal, providing members flexibility and expanded routing options beyond Alaska's own network.

However, limitations remain in place that may constrain some travelers. The short five-day booking window requires quick decision-making. The travel dates vary widely, with some destinations like Osaka available in late 2026, while others such as Budapest and Edinburgh are only valid in early 2027. Additionally, the economy-only restriction excludes premium cabin travelers who have historically valued Alaska's award program for its cost-effective business and first-class redemptions. These constraints mean the sale is best suited for those planning economy trips and flexible on travel timing.

Atmos Rewards continues to offer perks such as the ability to earn status credit on award flights, maintaining the program's relevance to frequent flyers seeking elite qualification. The Global Getaways monthly model provides a recurring chance to find value of this kind, accepting that not all members will find every month's offers suitable but that regular cadence will yield useful deals over time. The absence of premium cabin discount options keeps the program's primary allure for business and first-class enthusiasts somewhat unmet in this promotion.

The Atmos Rewards Global Getaways sale stands out by combining award discounts with partner airline availability, a somewhat rare approach among loyalty programs that typically limit promos to their own branded flights. By doing so, Alaska rewards members with a broader palette of redemption choices, potentially uncovering routes and options other programs may not offer. This strategy equips members with more nuanced ways to apply their points, especially for travel outside the peak holiday period.

Overall, Alaska's monthly Global Getaways promotion presents a noteworthy opportunity for economy travelers to book award flights at substantially reduced point costs. While the promotion comes with restrictions around booking windows, travel dates, and cabin class, the cost savings to popular international hubs signal attractive value for members planning trips during off-peak seasons. Travelers eyeing these destinations should act swiftly within the limited booking dates to lock in these discounts and capitalize on the expanded partner network offerings.

Philippine Airlines Debuts 10-Abreast Economy on Ultra-Long A350-1000 Flight

I recently flew on Philippine Airlines' (PAL) Airbus A350-1000 in economy on an ultra-long-haul flight, and it was pretty good. Now, I'm not usually 'the trip report guy', because I primarily fly in economy and I don't have much to say about my travels. I generally feel like economy is good enough for me, and I can find a way to have fun on almost any flight because I really enjoy flying. This, however, is a unique case because we're talking about a full-service airline installing ten-abreast economy seats on an A350, and I traveled on this aircraft from New York to Manila.

Cathay Pacific Group Posts 27% Operating Profit Rise and Stays on Track for 10% Capacity Growth

The group saw a 27% increase in its half-year operating profit, while net profit was up 71% year on year. Cathay Pacific Group is maintaining its full-year capacity growth guidance, with near-term demand "looking strong", and as its half-year profit improves. The Hong Kong-based airline group "remains on track" to reach its passenger capacity growth target of 10%, says Cathay chair Guy Bradley. "We remain cautiously optimistic for the rest of the year, subject to developments in the Middle East situation and other macroeconomic factors," Bradley, who was appointed airline chair in May, adds. The group, comprising mainline operator Cathay and low-cost unit HK Express, expects the "impact of elevated fuel prices" to continue for the rest of the year. Nonetheless – and if "market conditions are favourable" – the airline group is targeting to operate to 150 international points in 10 years, with 150 new aircraft set to join its fleet. For the six months ended 30 June, Cathay Group saw a 27% jump in its operating profit to HK$7.5 billion ($961 million). This was despite half-year expenses climbing 27% to HK$61.4 billion, led by a spike in fuel-related costs. Bradley notes that the group's fuel expenses close to doubled between the January-March and April-June quarters, underscoring the impact of the Middle East conflict on fuel costs. Group revenue was up 25% to HK$68 billion, on the back of strong travel demand on mainline operations, as well as significant operational improvements from HK Express. "Having got off to a strong start in the first quarter, we faced a more challenging second quarter due to the situation in the Middle East and the resulting significant increase in jet fuel prices," states Bradley. The group posted a net profit of HK$6.2 billion, a 71% jump from the year-ago period. During the period, Cathay took on non-recurring gains of around HK$1 billion, from the reduction of its shareholding in Air China in June this year.

Qantas to Sell Entire Stake in Jetstar Japan by Mid-2027 for $52 Million

Deal expected to be completed by June 2027. The Qantas Group has signed a binding agreement to divest its entire shareholding in low-cost operator Jetstar Japan, in a deal valued at around Y8.2 billion ($52 million). The agreement sees Qantas sell its 33.3% stake in Jetstar Japan through a share buyback, with the Development Bank of Japan entering as a new shareholder. Majority shareholder Japan Airlines will retain its 50% shareholding, as will financial services firm Tokyo Century. The share buy-back transaction is expected to be completed by June 2027, states Qantas. Jetstar Japan will "refresh" its brand from Jetstar to a new brand, and will transition to a "Japanese capital-led ownership structure". The group notes there will be "no impact" on the existing international operations between Australia and Japan operated by mainline carrier Qantas and low-cost airline Jetstar Airways. "The transaction will allow the Qantas Group to redirect capital investment towards Qantas and Jetstar's domestic and international operations in Australia," it adds. The deal was first announced in February this year, when Qantas and JAL signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding for the transaction. Jetstar Japan began operations in 2012 as one of several international Jetstar units. It currently has a fleet of Airbus A321neos and A320s.
